The second cluster begins tomorrow. This is my first time in Moscow or Russia and so far my experience has been quite different. From the airport to the hotel I met a friendly Ghanian man that helped me bargain a good price for the taxi. While others paid $140 I paid $50, though I wasn’t aware of the discount at the time. However being in Russia I was hesitant to go by myself on the roads of Moscow and I was RIGHT TO BE. The taxi driver, though he told me his name twice, I still couldn’t understand he was saying with his accent. So lets call him Vadim ( or atleast that’s what it sounded like). Vadim, to my surprise is fond of Jamaica’s fruits. He asked me about every type and the differences with russian fruit. He made that entire 1hr car ride quite entertining. Between miscommunication and language differences I almost didn’t realize when Vadim went off the road and began driving on the sidewalk. Given, there was alot of bumper to bumper traffic like any big city, but oh my word! He told me “This is normal in Russia” yet nobody else was doing it and he drew a cross and a little prayer after he merged back in traffic unharmed.
The rest of the day was pretty much uneventful after the taxi drive. The pool is great, pictures will follow soon.
World Cup Russia starts tomorrow. My events are 100 breaststroke and 50 back. I’m trying to spice it up a bit with the backstroke.
Until we meet again.
